BOUNDED SPACE is pleased to announce that BOUNDER CELL will present young artist Loocky Wei's solo showcase The Second Layer of Skin on September 13. The project features 30 wearable pieces made of pigskin, entirely designed and crafted by the artist. Through the relationship between the body’s skin and clothing, it explores the dialectic between the essence of things and the interpretation of meaning.
“The human body has 206 bones, yet clothing can present infinite appearances.”
Garments, like the second layer of skin, drift apart from the body.
What form they take ultimately depends on you.
The Second Layer of Skin unfolds across two interwoven structures of meaning. On one level, as a biological material, pigskin is, first and foremost, itself; On another, through the duration of its making, the marks of wearing, and the gradual transformation of the material, time itself is inscribed, turning each suspended garment into a witness of existence. Just as clothing is distinct from the body, interpretation may remain separate from the work itself. The pigskin garments function as vessels—sites where meanings accumulate yet hover outside their material essence, much like “a second layer of skin”. Meanwhile, the original appearance of the work gradually recedes behind these varied interpretations.
The creative inspiration drawn lived experience is like the pigskin—raw and intuitive. The artwork translated into material form is like the garment, open to the viewer’s interpretation. Why must the core of an idea often be conveyed through visible symbols? And does this process of transformation compromise or reduce the depth of the original essence? These questions also point to the artist’s reflection on the very nature of creation.
