BOUNDED SPACE is honored to announce the solo exhibition of Liao Jianhua — Every Year, Every Month, Every Day, Every Hour, Every Moment, Every Minute, Every Second — opening on September 13th. The exhibition will feature new works from Liao's recent "Unintentional" series. These works not only continue Liao Jianhua’s enduring painterly vocabulary, process, and spiritual depth, but also reveal new explorations and breakthroughs in his artistic practice.
Foreword
First, imagine a state:
A single person, consciously and actively repeating the same gesture every year, every month, every day, every hour, every moment, every minute, and every second for over two decades.
Is it difficult to conceive? Perhaps the inner journey might be like this: fear, restlessness, doubt, gradually reaching joy, tranquility, and even freedom... or perhaps something more complex and elusive.
Since 2003, beginning with a brushstroke resembling a “tadpole,” Liao Jianhua has persistently repeated this gesture, guided by intuition and the subconscious. Within the lineage of Chinese abstract art, his practice fuses the spirit of tradition with personal emotion, distinguishing it from Western abstraction. Through repetition, continuity, and restraint, his work unfolds as a meditative act, where spiritual expression transcends form, embodying lived experience through a daily, ongoing process.
Initially, Liao Jianhua explored different expressions using ink on paper. It was only in recent years that he began experimenting with new mediums on canvas—a step that took him over a decade to reach. Why so difficult? Because it implies the prolonged hesitation, struggle, and repeated experimentation within the artist, until a brief breakthrough is achieved, allowing the renewal of the artwork's appearance to manifest as a visible outcome.
In Liao Jianhua’s work, the recurring “tadpole-like” strokes arise as unconscious gestures shaped by life’s will and artistic impulse. Through their ceaseless repetition and layering, time and space are compressed into form, and spiritual intent finds material presence. Each mark differs, carrying its own vitality, revealing that even the smallest action can embody the vastness of existence.
For Liao Jianhua, the continuous temporal process of every year, every month, every day, every hour, every moment, every minute, and every second perhaps provides an outlet for spirit and existence. One must try to enter and experience this process: to feel the passage of time, to see willpower transforming into overlapping, intricate symbols, to taste the oscillation between self-perseverance and self-doubt...These are all moments where consciousness of life generates and surges within, moving towards a certain direction, towards truth, towards the infinite.
