Passer-by
In June 2021, Kang Jing went into the water by the lakeside of Liangzi Island in Hubei Province, holding a section of a tree stump and swimming toward the opposite shore of the lake. After reaching the land on the other side, he swam back, taking one hour and thirty minutes in total. The work was shot with a fixed camera position. As the man swam farther and farther away with the tree stump, he gradually disappeared from the frame, leaving only the vista where water and sky merged, with rolling waves and shifting dark clouds. Eventually, the man and the tree stump reappeared in the frame, as if they were mere passersby passing through this landscape of empty shots.
Kang Jing, born in Shandong, graduated from Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts with a bachelor'sdegree and from the Central Academy of Fine Arts with a master's degree. He currently lives in Beijing.
