AIRY
This work presents an intense competition between two highly sophisticated robotic arms, each wielding an ultra-light piece of sheer fabric, which they wave through the air with breathtaking coordination. It is not merely a dance performance but an AI-driven contest of strength and elegance, where every movement reflects profound conflict and a struggle for dominance. The AI systems controlling the robotic arms seamlessly shift between competition and cooperation, using precise control and calculated strategies to make the delicate fabric float in a near-tactical exchange.
Every flutter of the fabric responds directly to the opponent’s strategy, making the tension between the two palpable. The fabric becomes a symbol of their combative will, tracing curves and ripples in the air that vividly depict their battle for supremacy.
Baoyang Chen is an artist working at the intersection of art and technology. He graduated from Columbia University and the School of Visual Arts in New York. His practice deeply integrates art and artificial intelligence, focusing on the exploration of self-organizing emergent behaviors in AIs, as well as the ecological relationship between embodied intelligence and human cultural environments. Through his creative work, he seeks to deconstruct the shifts in power brought about by new technologies and critically examine the ideological implications of technology.
Chen has held solo exhibitions at major museums and art institutions worldwide, including the Zhejiang Art Museum, Wuhan K11, Shanghai Cc Art Center, Quantum Gallery, Yang Gallery, and Cloud Gallery in New York. He has also curated exhibitions at the New Museum in New York, Ming Contemporary Art Museum in Shanghai, Times Art Museum in Beijing, and the Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing. In 2019, he was awarded the Porsche Young Artist Award; in 2020, he received the Hyundai Blue Prize for curatorial excellence; and in 2024, he was honored with the OPPO Digital Art Award. Since 2020, Chen has served as the Chair of MMEDIA AI+Art and has been the co-curator of the Asia Digital Art Exhibition.
In 2023, he was selected for the World Internet Conference’s Global Young Leaders Program and became a member of its talent pool. His research has been widely published at international conferences and journals such as IJCAI, IEEE, and ACM. In September 2023, he was the lead author of the inaugural AI+Art White Paper issued by the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, further cementing his academic leadership in the AI and art integration field.
