Approaching 23-01

Approaching23-01 is a kinetic installation driven by motors, in which black lines travel along designated paths and rhythms—approaching and then drifting apart. The lines move in a continuous cycle, leaving behind traces of geometric forms in the viewer's visual memory. These fleeting outlines sketch a sense of time and space that can never be fixed or frozen.

Artist Introduction
Gao Ruyun

Gao Ruyun works across various media, including installation, painting, and photography. He employs mechanical motion as a core technique, generating forms and rhythms devoid of explicit meaning or emotional expression. By deliberately avoiding subjectivity, his work maintains a certain distance from the viewer, diminishing emotional immediacy and instead opening up a contemplative space—one that leads to an unimpeded, infinite “steady path” of perception.

In his installations, black lines move along predetermined trajectories, repeatedly converging and diverging. This cyclical motion leaves behind geometric traces in the viewer’s visual memory, evoking a sense of time and space that resists fixation. Beneath the calm surface of his work lies a subtle psychological tension, hinting at latent dynamics of agency and passivity. Gao’s practice invites open-ended interpretations, encouraging viewers to engage with the quiet intensity embedded in movement and form.
