Not seeing others
Under the light has two parts: 1000 flashlights and a light screen. The light screen shows various of internet buzzwords and pearls of wisdom. People can see the letters when the flashlights turn off. However, when 1000 flashlights turn on and 1000 beams are shining on the opposite screen wall, all letters disappear. The screen becomes bright and empty. When people are coming to the screen wall, the beams from flashlights are blocked by the bodies. So you can see letters in shadow. However, you cannot see letters on the wall where there are no shadows. Instead of buzzwords, Kant's Moral Law and the three maxims of the Greek Delphi Temple are displayed at the top of the screen. I hope that people will not only have an enjoyable experience at the exhibition, but also gain some thought from the words on the screen.
This work also wants to explain Plato’s Allegory of the Cave from a different perspective. Allegory of the Cave wants to emphasize Light’s power. Light is reality. In my work, people cannot saw the letters under the light, however, people see the reality in the shadow.
Born in 1986, in Suide, Shannxi, Lives and works in Beijing, China
Graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Scenic Design for Film and Theater from the Communication University of China.
The artist’s practice is concept-driven, with works that include oil painting, mechanical installations, and video.
