Impromptu Rabbit Hole
This work is constructed primarily through hand-knotted rope, combined with found objects such as shoes, clothing, toys, egg models, fabric, spoons, and other everyday materials, to present a story of a sleepless night's wandering thoughts. Inspired by the artist's own experience of insomnia, the work begins with wide‑eyed staring into the darkness and the struggle to calm a restless mind—from which all imagination unfolds. Layered around the spatial columns, the installation presents a scene devoid of rules, where logic is turned upside down: someone escapes from a fish tank, eggshells become soil nurturing fish bones, a droplet of water rests on a grill, and mosquitoes swirl and flutter in midair... Amid these visions, viewers will also recognise ordinary objects from daily life, as if the mundane itself is taking part in this nocturnal carnival. It all appears joyful and beautiful, yet a giant eye keeps gazing at the night, and the night is deliberately stirred into unrest by this celebratory spectacle. This magnified state of excitement, at a moment meant for stillness, feels both liberating and precarious.
As if Alice has fallen into the rabbit hole, we never know what wonders await inside. Each of us has our own rabbit hole, one that speaks to growth and life. When the rules and uncertainties of society trigger anxiety over shifting social roles and identity fluidity, we can still preserve inner freedom and curiosity, and summon the courage to stay clear‑headed and true to ourselves in a seemingly irrational world of growing up. Adopting a lighter, more exuberant attitude toward life's unsettling moments may be the answer. Too often, we fight fiercely against our surroundings, trying to banish feelings of aversion, anxiety, grief, and pain—forgetting that these very emotions are an inescapable part of ordinary life. To remain hopeful and joyful while coexisting with them is the very strength we need to wrestle with the unsettling forces of existence.
