Liu Yangwen
My work projects a composite of my cognition, behavior, aesthetic sensibility, and lived experience. All of this is guided by intuition. I seek to extract from objectively existing things those formal images that correspond to my inner perception. Since objects themselves are relatively meaningless, I must abstract, simplify, and reconstruct them, fully unfolding an internal aesthetic structure on a two-dimensional plane. Through pure form, objects are re-presented from the artist’s perspective; through my own visual language, I generate a sense of estrangement, transforming the meaningless into the meaningful.
I believe that what matters is not what is painted, but how it is painted. My practice therefore takes commonplace subjects and renders them through unconventional methods. Lines traverse the surface, constructing clusters of sharp geometric forms, in which the outward appearance of objects is dismantled and reshaped amid irregular lines.
